Matt Light Noncommittal About Retirement Decision, Hasn’t Been at Gillette Stadium for Offseason Workouts

BOSTON — Patriots left tackle Matt Light sidestepped questions about his potential retirement Wednesday, but it was clear that he hasn't been overly involved with the daily workings of the team's offseason plan.

Light was on hand for BTIG's Commissions for Charity Day, which was working in cooperation with the Matt Light Foundation, and he asked Pats tight end Rob Gronkowski when they started voluntary offseason workouts, which began Monday.

Since the workouts are voluntary, they aren't always attended by the team's high-profile veterans, so it's not a concern that Light hasn't been there. However, the coaching staff does a diligent job of ensuring every player on the roster understands the offseason timeline.

Therefore, there are two possible explanations for Light not knowing about the start of the offseason workouts. He's either going to retire but not ready to make his public announcement, or head Bill Belichick told Light to lay low during the early portion of the workouts in order to save his energy for the summer.

With the NFL draft just a week away, there's no doubt Light has kept the Patriots up to speed with his thought process, but he wasn't sharing much of it Wednesday.

"At this point, I'm just kind of taking it day by day, but we'll see how it goes," Light said. "[The decision will come] sooner than later."

Light said he has spent his time in Ohio working on some stuff for his foundation, including a youth turkey hunt. Aside from that, he said it's been a quiet offseason.

When Light was asked if he had a specific timeline in mind to make a decision, he responded, "No, not really, although my wife has a pretty good idea of what's going to happen with me. She keeps me pretty busy."
