Ozzie Guillen has had the same routine on road trips for “25, 28 years.” And that routine further solidifies his status as the most interesting manager in baseball.
The Marlins skipper recently discussed what he does when traveling, and according to him, there’s not a whole lot to it, aside from a few cocktails.
“Get drunk and go to sleep,” Guillen said of his typical road trip, according to The Palm Beach Post. “I’ve got my routine. Game’s over, stay in the lobby of the hotel, the hotel bar, get drunk and go to sleep. I get drunk because I’m happy because we won or get drunk because I’m very sad and disturbed because we lose. Same routine for 25, 28 years. It hasn’t changed. I don’t like to go out.”
Guillen has always been pretty candid, so this revelation shouldn’t be too shocking. It still had some reporters a bit skeptical, though, and he was asked if he was kidding. He responded with a big, fat no.
“No. Why do I have to lie?” Guillen said.”I never get in trouble. I’m never going to leave the hotel. Nobody can call my wife and say we saw Ozzie in this bar or this place.”
Because of his tendency to throw back a few drinks, Guillen hasn’t exactly been able to cherish the cities he’s traveled to, as he’s often in recovery mode.
“I don’t have time,” he said of straying from the hotel. “I have to be [at the stadium] early, and I go to sleep so drunk I have to recover until 11 o’clock.”
Well, as long as he’s drinking responsibly.
