The Rays and Jeremy Hellickson got quite a scare on Wednesday morning.
The prized young pitcher was hit on the head with a ball during batting practice in Detroit, and he was taken to a nearby hospital, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Fortunately, Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon told reporters that Hellickson was not bleeding and never lost conciousness while being tended to. According to the Times, Maddon also indicated that he believes Hellickson will be OK.
The young righty was apparently hit during a bullpen session as the Tigers took batting practice. He received medical attention on the field before being carted off.
Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Tribune added a little bit more information. According to Moore, Rays bullpen coach Stan Boroski said that Tigers players yelled for Hellickson to look out, and he did react, but did so too late before being struck on the side of the head.
