Report: Johan Cruyff Among Candidates to Replace Damien Comolli as Liverpool Director of FootballJohan Cruyff could be called in to oversee Liverpool’s soccer operations.

The Dutch icon has emerged as a potential candidate to replace Damien Comolli as the club’s director of football, according to the BBC.

“Reds owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have yet to draw up a definitive shortlist to replace Comolli,” the report says. “But the Dutchman, 64, has impressed FSG chief John W. Henry in his senior roles with Ajax and Chivas in Mexico.”

Comolli’s departure left LFC manager Kenny Dalglish in charge of all on-field matters at LFC. But that situation may persist only for a short period of time.

LFC chairman Tom Werner told the club website that he that the management structure — with the manager reporting to the director of football — will survive and Comolli would be replaced.

“We’re still confident the structure we’ve discussed is the right structure,” Wener said. “Part of the reason we made this decision now is because we want to start the process of finding an excellent replacement.”

In February, Cruyff joined Mexican club C.D. Guadalaraja, better known as “Chivas,” in an advisory role. He is tasked with assessing all aspects of the club’s soccer operations and overhauling any parts he sees fit.

His role with Chivas does not require him to live in Mexico, and he is still based in Barcelona (where he has lived since 1973). He can convince his contacts in the Dutch game to lend their expertise to the historic Mexican club, as Edwin van der Sar was reportedly on the verge of doing.
