The one-time slugger will play with the Cleveland Indians, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports. He has a full no-trade clause as well as an out clause in the contract that will let him leave if Grady Sizemore returns from the 60-day disabled list, according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com. Sizemore is expected to come off the DL on June 3.
Cleveland will be the seventh team in the long career of Damon, who is just 287 hits shy of 3,000. He said throughout the offseason that he wanted to keep playing but did not find a suitor until the Indians.
Damon has played in the majors since 1995, starting with the Kansas City Royals. He spent a year in Oakland before coming to Boston, where he helped the team end its 86-year title drought and win the 2004 World Series. Damon then went to play in New York in 2006, where he remained until the end of the Yankees’ 2009 championship season. He played a season in Detroit then joined the Tampa Bay Rays last year.
Damon is a lifetime .286 hitter.
