Report: Josh Beckett Received Cortisone Shots for Thumb During Offseason, May Eventually Require SurgeryJosh Beckett is downplaying the severity of a thumb issue he is dealing with, but he may eventually have to address it with surgery.

The righthander revealed to WEEI's Alex Speier that he's been dealing with the issue for 18 months and has been treating it this offseason. He says he's recevied two cortisone shots — one during spring training — and that it may eventually require surgery down the road.

"Everything's fine," Beckett said. "I really have no idea how this got blown out like this. I was dumbfounded."

Beckett explained that he went to see the same hand specialist that injured closer Andrew Bailey visited because his thumb wasn't responding to the latest cortisone shot, but he didn't seem too concerned.

"We had to make sure there wasn't some more stuff going on," he said. "I think everything's good. There was just one concern that it was my ligament, much like Andrew Bailey's deal, and it wasn't."

That's good news for Red Sox fans, who have probably heard enough about thumbs for a while.
