Sidney Crosby Dubbed ‘The Cowardly Penguin’ on Cover of Philadelphia Daily News

Put ’em up! Put ’em up!

While Sidney Crosby isn’t traditionally known for dropping the gloves — although he did rumble with Claude Giroux in Game 3 — he might have a little extra incentive to try and demonstrate some manliness in Game 4 of the Penguins-Flyers Eastern Conference quarterfinal series on Wednesday night.

That’s because Sid the Kid was depicted on the cover of the Philadelphia Daily News as “The Cowardly Penguin,” which, of course, is a play on The Cowardly Lion character from the The Wizard of Oz.

Crosby’s head is actually Photoshopped onto The Cowardly Lion’s body as part of the cover, which also features a subhead that reads, “Time to Finish Off Sniveling Sidney.”

The Flyers hold a 3-0 edge in the series and could complete the sweep on their home ice on Wednesday night. It’s been a rough series — to say the least — but as you’d expect, Crosby has been one of the focal points thus far.

It isn’t the first time the Philadelphia Daily News has turned some heads with a headline. As you might remember, the newspaper also ran a headline declaring Michael Vick the “Top Dog” in 2010. Surely, I don’t have to explain why that one got some people talking.

Actually, when you consider that headline, Wednesday’s is pretty tame — assuming Crosby isn’t running some unknown penguin- or lion-fighting rings in the Pittsburgh area.
