It takes some serious intestinal fortitude to step in front of an NHL slap shot. Blackhawks defenseman Sami Lepisto is living proof of why.

Lepisto apparently stepped in front of a slap shot during Chicago's first-round playoff series against Phoenix and lived to tell about it. Unfortunately, he also came away with a giant souvenir.

The gutsy blue liner tweeted a photo on Monday of a bruise he received while blocking a shot. It's unclear whether the photo was actually taken on Tuesday or right after the incident happened, but Chicago was eliminated last Wednesday, so there's a possibility the bruise has some staying power.

"This is why I shouldn't be blocking slap shots!!" Lepisto tweeted along with the photo.

Judging by the bruise's size, nobody should be blocking slap shots. Then again, that's what separates hockey players from the rest of humanity.

Check out the gigantic leg bruise in the photo below. A hat tip to NBC Sports' Pro Hockey Talk blog for pointing it out.
