The Boston-New York rivalry has extended to boxing.
Of course, when you hear Boston versus New York, you probably think Red Sox-Yankees, Patriots-Jets, Bruins-Rangers, etc. Well, Framingham, Mass., native Danny O’Connor took the Boston-New York matchup to the boxing ring at a tournament at the House of Blues on Thursday night, drawing a very boisterous crowd.
O’Connor defeated Daniel Sostre of Highland, N.Y., in four rounds of a 10-round match. Sostre forfeited after the fourth round due to a hand injury. It was O’Connor’s first fight in Massachusetts in three years.
Before O’Connor stepped into the boxing ring, the Dropkick Murphys played a few songs, and Rene Rancourt delivered the national anthem.
O’Connor likes competition — there’s no question about that. But he also likes giving the fans something to enjoy.
“I just wanted to perform at top level and impress all the fans that came out to support me,” O’Connor told The Boston Globe. “[Thursday], I think I did.”
