Beckham will travel to Greece as part of the official delegation representing the the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, England. Greek officials will hand Beckham the torch, which he will take aboard the special airplane dubbed “The Firefly.”
The plane will land at Culdrose naval base. Beckham will hand the torch to the first of 8,000 torchbearers who will take it on a 70-day torch relay. The Olympic torch relay will cover roughly 7,950 miles around the U.K. and Ireland.
On July 27, it will enter London’s Olympic Stadium during the opening ceremonies.
It will cap a busy week for Beckham. On Tuesday he and his Galaxy teammates visited the White House in Washington, D.C. They were honored at a ceremony commemorating their victory in the 2011 MLS Cup. It is unknown if Beckham will return in time for Saturday night’s L.A. clasico when the Galaxy face Chivas USA.
