LFC, Newcastle, Manchester United, Chelsea FC, Tottenham and Everton are the clubs that have scouted the FC Twente striker in recent weeks.
The 21-year-old is one of Dutch soccer's hottest properties. His prowess in front of goal has seen him score 62 goals (in all competitions) in the last two seasons and become a full international at a young age. He will likely be part of the Netherlands' 23-man squad for this summer's European Championships.
Twente will consider transfer offers starting at £12.5 million ($20.2 million). Manager Steve McClaren thinks the six-foot two-inch de Jong has what it takes to succeed in the English top flight.
"Luuk is an 'English style' striker, made for English football," McClaren said. "I am just desperate to keep him one more year in Holland. But I realise that will be difficult.
"Luuk is big, strong, brilliant in the air and scores goals so easily. He has every quality a top class striker needs to have for a big club."
McClaren's top assistant, former Barcelona star and Dutch international Patrick Kluivert, thinks de Jong has what it takes to reach the top of European soccer.
"Luuk [de Jong] is going to be the number one striker for Holland in the very near future," Kluivert said. "He has everything a striker needs. Here at FC Twente we are grooming him for a future with one of Europe’s biggest clubs. He can become a European giant."
Liverpool will most likely be in the market for a striker in the summer transfer window. It was rumored that the Reds were interested in signing de Jong during the January window, but a move never materlialized. Any success he has at the European Championship will likely drive his price up, but he could be worth the risk.
