Health Scare Could Drive Sir Alex Ferguson Into Early Retirement, Dave Whelan SaysSir Alex Ferguson could turn the 2012-13 season into a months’-long farewell tour. The Manchester United manager is contemplating retiring in a year’s time due to a recent health scare, according to ESPN.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan, a close friend of Ferguson’s, broke the news that the 70-year-old might accelerate his departure schedule. It was thought that Ferguson planned to continue as United manager through at least the 2013-14 season. But the end of his storied career on the bench could come sooner than that.

“After next season, Sir Alex will call it a day,” Whelan said. “The pressure is telling, especially when you are at the top for so long. “The older you get the harder it is to cope with all that pressure, and eventually it will affect you.

“I am sure his intention was to carry on for two or three, maybe even more years, but he has had a little scare in the last week or so and that tells me he will think very hard, and realise there is no point trying to carry on for another five years and take the risk.”

Ferguson has been in charge at Old Trafford since November 1986. In that time United has captured 37 major trophies, including 12 Premier League titles.

The game has seen remarkable changes in those 25-plus years, and Ferguson has been able to adapt to the times. He admits that he has mellowed over the years, taking a less combative approach with his players and fellow coaches.

After losing the 2011-12 title in agonizing circumstances, Ferguson will pour every last bit of energy into taking the league championship back from Manchester City.
