Jabar Gaffney, who spent three seasons in New England from 2006 through 2008, officially re-joined the team on Monday after reportedly agreeing to terms on a deal late last week.
With the addition, the Patriots have now signed five receivers through free agency — Deion Branch (re-signed), Anthony Gonzalez, Brandon Lloyd, Donte’ Stallworth — and one in the draft — Jeremy Ebert — over the past two months. New England’s roster now boasts a pretty hefty 11 wideouts heading into the summer, which should make for a very competitive training camp at the position.
During his first stint in New England, Gaffney played in 43 games, catching 84 passes for 1,059 yards and eight touchdowns. Gaffney is likely best remembered, though, for his production during the 2006 playoffs when he led the team with 21 receptions and scored two touchdowns over the three-game stretch. He also became the first player in NFL history to catch eight or more passes for over 100 yards in back-to-back playoff games.
Last season proved to be Gaffney’s most productive during his 10-year career. After being traded from Denver to Washington just before the season, Gaffney started in 15 of 16 games for the Redskins and recorded career bests with 68 receptions for 947 yards. He also added five touchdowns on the year.
