Jarrod Saltalamacchia had an early exit from the Red Sox' Tuesday night game against the Tigers.

The catcher left just after the end of the sixth because he was "feeling ill," a Red Sox spokesman said.

Saltalamacchia was replaced by Kelly Shoppach.

The catcher has fought through his share of illness and injury this year. He needed 12 stitches after his head was grazed by a foul ball earlier this month.

He was also dealing with dehydration symptoms on Saturday night. After being scratched from the starting lineup, though, Saltalamacchia came into the game as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the ninth and hit a walk-off home run to give the Sox the victory.
