We may get some more answers on the Junior Seau suicide in the near future.
The Los Angeles Times reports that the former NFL linebacker's family has decided that it will allow Seau's brain to be studied after he took his own life earlier this week with a self-inflicted gunshot to the chest.
"The family was considering this almost from the beginning, but they didn't want to make any emotional decisions," San Diego Chargers chaplain Shawn Mitchell told the Times. "And when they came to a joint decision that absolutely this was the best thing, it was a natural occurrence for the Seau family to go forward."
Mitchell also told the paper that the family's decision stemmed from their desire "to help other individuals down the road."
It's unclear at this point who will study the brain, but the obvious choice would be the Boston University Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy. That same center came to the conclusion that there were signs of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) in the brain of Dave Duerson, another former NFL player who shot himself in the chest. BU has reportedly already showed interest in obtaining Seau's brain.
