That is the message Mezut Ozil delivered on Friday. Germany is one of the pre-tournament favorites, and its players are focused solely on victory, according to FIFA.com.
"The title is our aim, otherwise we could save ourselves the trip," FIFA.com reports Ozil told Bild. "In 2008, we were second at the EUROs, in 2010 third at the [FIFA] World Cup — we have always failed just before the winning line. It would certainly be a disappointment if we were to finish second again. I am convinced that we can do it."
Ozil, 23, is tipped to be one of the stars of the tournament. He is coming off a sensational campaign in which he helped Real Madrid win La Liga in record-breaking fashion. Ozil played 52 games in all competitions, scoring seven goals and setting up 29 more. He had a fruitful second season with the Spanish giant, but the playmaker's 2011-12 season is not quite finished.
"This is certainly the most beautiful phase of my life, I am very happy," Ozil said. "I have just had the best season of my career and the feeling of winning the title with Real was just fantastic. But the season is not over yet. We now want to win the European Championships."
Ozil led Germany's U-21 team to victory in the 2009 UEFA European Championship. He sounds ready to take his career into a new stratosphere this summer.
