BOSTON –– Mauro Gomez has been on a tear in Pawtucket, clubbing 10 homers and totaling 33 RBIs with a .294 batting average through 34 games. Now, the designated hitter will have a chance to sustain that stretch in Boston.
Before Sunday's game, the Red Sox placed outfielder Darnell McDonald on the disabled list with an oblique injury. In a corresponding move, the team elevated Gomez to the major league club.
The Red Sox inked the 27-year-old during the offseason when the Braves didn't re-sign him to return to their farm system. Last season, Gomez flourished at Triple-A Gwinnett, smacking 24 home runs and driving in 90 runs.
During his brief time in the Red Sox organization, Gomez has left quite the impression on Red Sox director of player development Ben Crockett.
"He's got power," Crockett told NESN.com. "He swings at his pitches, and he has a really good control of the bat, and he's able to use the field. He's a pretty complete hitter. There's times the approach will suffer if he's looking to hit for power, but for the most part, we've seen a pretty well-rounded hitter."
It is currently unknown how and when McDonald suffered the oblique injury.
