The Boston Red Sox and Bobby Valentine knew they had some roster decisions to make. With the recent surge of Will Middlebrooks, the return of Kevin Youkilis and injuries to Cody Ross and Ryan Sweeney, changes were imminent.

On Tuesday, the Red Sox made those changes official, sending Ross to the 15-day disabled list with a fracture in his left foot and activating Youkilis.

Scott Podsednik was also recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket, with Daisuke Matsuzaka heading to the 60-day disabled list to make room for the veteran outfielder, Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington announced Tuesday. The Red Sox also placed Sweeney on the seven-day disabled list with a concussion Monday.

With new players at his disposal, Valentine put together an interesting lineup for Tuesday night’s game against the Baltimore Orioles. In order to fit both Youkilis and Middlebrooks into the lineup, Valentine penciled in Adrian Gonzalez in right field and put Youkilis at first base, keeping Middlebrooks at third.

Injuries have forced Valentine’s hand a bit early in the season, but the lineup could be useful going forward, with interleague play right around the corner.
