“Fabio Capello has held talks with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich about becoming the club’s new manager,” the report says. “Capello has made no secret of the fact he wants to return to club football and enjoyed living in the capital during his four-year reign as England boss.”
Capello seemingly has unfinished business in England. His four-year tenure as national team manager ended in controversey, when he resigned after the FA stripped John Terry of the captaincy against his wishes.
England reached two major international tournaments under his guidance. But its exit in the Round of 16 at the 2010 FIFA World Cup led many to question his hefty salary — £6 million ($9.5 million) a year — and managerial ability.
The 65-year-old has already won league championships in Italy and Spain. He could see Stamford Bridge the perfect place to cement his reputation as one of the greatest coaches in the modern game.
Chelsea is currently led by another Italian: interim manager Roberto di Matteo. He led the Blues to victory in the FA Cup and a place in Saturday’s UEFA Champions League final. Although he has won over players and fans since taking over for Andre Villas-Boas in March, he may not have done enough to convince Abramovich that he is the right man to lead the club into the future.
Abramovich reportedly wants a big-name manager to handle his star-studded team. He would prefer soon to be former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola or former Chelsea and current Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho to take over, according to reports.
Capello wouldn’t be a bad fall-back option. He has experience leading some of the world’s biggest clubs (AC Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid) and managing star players from all over the globe.
