Seau's family at first appeared to agree, granting permission Thursday for Seau's brain to be used for study.
But Saturday, the pastor for the Seaus said the family is reconsidering, according to Reuters.
"They have now stepped back from what they were thinking initially," pastor Shawn Mitchell said. "Nothing is definite right now."
Mitchell would not say what specifically the family is unsure about.
"I think everything is being revisited," he told Reuters.
The family is still talking it over as they plan for Seau's memorial service, he said.
"They just want to slow down, be sure they’re doing it right," he said.
Seau, 43, died Wednesday of a gunshot wound to his chest. He had spent 20 years in the NFL as a linebacker for the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. While known for being both tough on the field and friendly off it, Seau had struggled with depression later in his life.
Several NHL and NFL players have committed suicide recently as researchers continue to probe the link between concussions and depression. Boston University is among those studying the brains of deceased athletes to try to pinpoint the damage and recommend solutions.
