The favorite to sign Oswalt appears to be the Texas Rangers, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.
Oswalt's close relationship with Rangers manager Ron Washington and pitching coach Mike Maddux are big reasons behind the likely decision, Olney says. The other contributing factor is the close proximity of Texas to Oswalt's home in Mississippi. Oswalt spent the first eight season of his career pitching in Houston, so he's also very comfortable living in Texas.
There were a number of suitors in on Oswalt during the offseason and the interest has carried over to the current regular season. The Red Sox, Phillies, Cardinals and Rangers were the primary landing spots, and it looks like Texas may indeed win out in the end.
The three-time All Star should can still be a serviceable, if not great, pitcher in the majors. Oswalt went just 9-10 in 2011, but posted a 3.69 ERA during an injury-shortened season with the Phillies.
For his career, Oswalt is 159-93 with a 3.21 ERA and 1759 strikeouts. And entering what would be his 11th season in the big leagues, Oswalt surely still has plenty left in the tank to be an effective No. 2 or No. 3 starter in most rotations.
