The Knicks pursued Tyson Chandler for his defensive ability, and it appears their expectations have been fulfilled.

Whether New York makes it past Miami in the first round of the playoffs is still up in the air, but an Associated Press source reported early Wednesday morning that Tyson Chandler has been named the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year.

The official announcement is to be made Wednesday.

Chandler was a key piece of the Dallas Mavericks' championship-winning team last year. This season, he averaged 11.3 points, 9.9 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 0.9 steals a game on a New York team that has had stretches of defensive brilliance.
