Unsurprisingly, the Pittsburgh Penguins were not content with their 2011-12 season — one which saw them finish one point behind the East's No. 1 seed Rangers, but bounced in the first round of the playoffs in six games by Keystone State rival Philadelphia.
The team has already made a pair of headline-grabbing moves to start the offseason. After trading away center Jordan Staal to Carolina for Brandon Sutter, Brian Dumoulin and a third-round pick in this year's draft, the Penguins announced on Thursday that they had signed franchise cornerstone Sidney Crosby to a monstrous 12-year deal worth more than $100 million.
With eighth overall pick Derrick Pouliot now waiting in the wings and all of free agency still to come, it appears the Penguins have reloaded and are ready to threaten the rest of the NHL.
