There are a lot of things that make sports great. But sometimes, great moments have little to do with the athletes themselves, and more to do with the fans.

Boston Celtics supporters proved this no more than a week ago, arming the C’s with encouragement by chanting “Let’s Go Celtics” towards the end of a Game 6 loss that was rapidly spiraling out of control in the Miami Heat’s favor. And earlier today, Celtics of a different kind showed why spectators can sometimes be the most intriguing and uplifting element in sports.

In the midst of a crushing 4-0 loss to soccer powerhouse Spain, it was safe to assume that the Irish national team wasn’t feeling tip-top. But as time expired in the game, the Irish fans seemed determined to encourage the men representing their country by belting out a chilling performance of “The Fields of Athenry,” a popular Irish folk ballad notoriously associated with Irish athletics.

Let’s tip our hats to the Irish for once again reminding us that sometimes, great moments in sports can come not from the fields or courts, but from the stands.
