Most Celtics fans love Paul Pierce. Those with no vested interest in the C’s, however, tend to hold different opinions on the longtime Boston captain.
Jay Pharoah, for one, thinks Pierce is “an actress” and “a diva,” two titles that athletes don’t typically like being labeled with. The comedian made his views on Pierce clear before Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals during an apppearance on ESPN’s First Take.
Pharoah, a cast member on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, is known largely for his impressions. His recent spot-on impression of ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith is what has gotten sports fans’ attention lately. However, it’s Pharoah’s criticism that got Pierce’s attention after the Celtics defeated the Heat in Miami to take a 3-2 series lead.
Pierce issued the following tweet shortly after the victory.
We’ll see if there’s a rebuttal from Pharoah any time soon, but if the Celtics keep defying the odds and winning this postseason, it might be difficult for him to come up with much material. Call Pierce what you want, but the guy has helped get the C’s to the verge of another NBA Finals appearance.
Despite the subtle (or not so subtle) jab from Pierce early Wednesday morning, something tells me his main focus is elsewhere, as the C’s look to close out the Heat at TD Garden on Thursday.
