Even though Santana walked five batters on the night, he accomplished the feat in pretty epic fashion in the ninth inning.
After going down 3-0 to 2011 World Series MVP David Freese, Santana battled back to strikeout Freese and dominated the Cardinals in an 8-0 Mets win.
Santana threw 134 pitches in the no-hitter, a very high number even for complete game but even more so for a guy with extensive injury history. He also struck out eight on the evening,
Many great pitchers have thrown for the Mets over the years, including Tom Seaver, Tom Glavine and a number of other guys not named Tom. But it was Santana who finally broke through with a no-hit night.
Many props to the former Cy Young award winner, as shoulder surgery was clearly no obstacle for Santana and the long road back was clearly well worth the work for such a glorious accomplishment. Hats off!
