But Mets outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Yankees pitcher Cody Eppley took the phrase literally on Friday — by actually taking the New York subway to their game at Yankee Stadium.
“I think there’s a lot of excitement in the city going into this series,” said Eppley. “The whole experience was a blast.”
Nieuwenhuis, who was over enemy lines on the ride through the Bronx to the home of the Yanks, seemed to have a solid understanding as to why it is actually called a Subway Series.
“Somebody said ‘Why are you guys taking the subway to the park?'” Nieuwenhuis said. “I was like, ‘It’s the Subway Series, right?'”
The event was put together by the MLB Fan Cave, and certainly gave spectators an experience to remember. Kris Vonderhaar, a first-time visitor to Yankee Stadium, wasn’t quite sure what to make of the strange sight on the train.
“I didn’t think they were real players,” admitted Vonderhaar.
Historically, the Yankees have a slight edge during Subway Series games, compiling an 50-35 record against the Mets during regular season interleague play.
