Red Sox Draft Pick Barred From High School Graduation After Missing Rehearsal to Negotiate With TeamUpdate: Ty Buttrey will be allowed to participate in his graduation from Providence High School.

Ty Buttrey is a senior at Providence Senior High School in Charlotte, N.C. Buttrey was slated to graduate with the rest of his classmates on June 12, but there's one problem — Buttrey is now likely not going to be allowed to walk.

The reason, however, is not what you may think.

Buttrey will be barred from participating in commencement exercises because he skipped a graduation rehearsal to accept a contract offer from the Red Sox, who drafted him 151st overall in the fourth round of the MLB draft on Tuesday night.

The high school had earlier informed students that phones would not be allowed at the rehearsal. It has also been a standing rule that any student who misses the rehearsal is not able to walk.

Buttrey's family attempted to negotiate around the "no cell phone" rule, since he would need to be able to negotiate with whatever team drafted him at the time the rehearsal was taking place.

PSHS denied this request, so Buttrey stayed home to take care of baseball-related business.

The 38th-best prospect in this year's draft according to Baseball America, Buttrey was the owner of a 9-2 record and a 0.91 ERA this past season. He is currently committed to the University of Arkansas.
