One Vancouver blog certainly thinks so, and has presented some pretty convincing evidence to support the claim. And unlike his tire-pumping rival from last year’s Stanley Cup Final who refuses to answer questions about his vague political rants on Facebook, whoever is behind this Twitter account has displayed a welcome sense of humor and plenty of willingness to interact with the public.
The mystery Twitter account goes by the handle @strombone1, and the avatar of a man dunking his head in a urinal would seem a fitting symbol for how Luongo and the Canucks’ last couple of seasons have ended.
But the fine folks at Pass It to Bulis have much more to go on than that. They began assembling the evidence in a February post. As Harrison Mooney sought to uncover the identity of another mysterious Twitter account with apparent ties to the Canucks, he detailed mounting evidence pointing to Luongo’s possible double life on the social media network.
Mooney cited the fact that fellow Canucks like Kevin Bieksa, Ryan Kesler and Alex Edler, plus former Canuck Tanner Glass were all followers of @strombone1 and a host of other strange coincidences.
On Thursday, Mooney took it a step further, publishing an interview conducted through direct messages on Twitter with the @strombone1 account. The Q-and-A session didn’t provide definitive proof that Luongo is the running the account, but it at least showed whoever is tweeting under that name has a heck of a good sense of humor.
Mooney opened directly by asking, “If you were to describe yourself, would you say you’re a) confident b) shy, or c) Roberto Luongo?”
The reply? “I don’t know the answer to that but I’ve always been told when u don’t know the answer you can’t go wrong with C.”
The best response, though, may have come when asked who the Canucks should keep, Luongo or Cory Schneider, and @strombone1 answered, “I hear Lack has a bright future.” That’s a reference to Canucks goalie prospect Eddie Lack, who has spent the last two years with Vancouver’s AHL affiliates in Manitoba and Chicago.

It’s worth a read, and if Luongo really is behind that screen, the embattled netminder’s ability to maintain such a self-deprecating sense of humor amid rumors of his pending exit from the Canucks (after signing a 12-year deal with the club just two seasons ago) shows he is worthy of a little more respect than he’s been getting, even from Bruins fans.
