Josh Beckett, Clay Buchholz, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Aaron Cook have all spent time on the disabled list, and Daniel Bard has gone down to Triple-A Pawtucket. The Red Sox are having a hard time filling the gaps in their starting rotation.
Franklin Morales has recently come in for a few starts, and that has worked out pretty well for the Red Sox. In two starts, he has a 3.27 ERA with one win and 17 strikeouts over 11 innings.
Cook didn't last long in his first start with the Red Sox on May 5, when he was forced to leave the game due to a knee laceration after giving up six earned runs in 2 2/3 innings. But he returned to the Red Sox roster Sunday and pitched a solid five outings against a good Atlanta lineup. He gave up three runs (only two earned) and allowed six hits.
Morales and Cook are the two best pitchers the Red Sox have to draw from to fill their starting needs right now, but trades always remain a possibility.
