Dustin Pedroia Growing Frustrated After Re-Injuring Thumb Diving for BallDustin Pedroia is not in the lineup on July 4, but hopefully he will be back soon.

The Red Sox second baseman revealed to reporters before the team's game on Wednesday that he's still dealing with pain in his thumb, and that he may have re-injured it diving for a ball in Tuesday's 3-2 loss.

"After the game [Tuesday] I was sore and then [Wednesday] I'm pretty sore," Pedroia said. "It's not in the area where I first got hurt. I think when I dove for that ball in right field, I don't know what happened."

Pedroia noted that this version of the injury affected the back side of his thumb — which is not where he was previously having an issue — and expressed some disappointment in his lack of answers surrounding the timetable for a recovery.

"It's pretty frustrating," Pedroia continued, noting that he was told not to swing a bat while sitting out. "I have a high pain tolerance, but I don't know."

With Will Middlebrooks dealing with a hamstring injury, the Red Sox infield can ill afford any additional injuries. Nick Punto is playing second on Wednesday, with rookie Mauro Gomez starting at third in Middlebrooks' place.
