Italy seemingly entered Euro 2012 in a state of turmoil. A match-fixing scandal on the eve of the tournament combined with long-term injuries to rob the squad of several key players. Drawn into a group with Spain, Croatia and Ireland, Italy faced a real challenge to advance to the knockout stages.
Manager Cesare Prandelli greatly impressed in his first international tournament, showing strong tactical and man-management skills. Italy drew its first two games against Spain and Croatia before going on to beat Ireland to earn a quarterfinal meeting with England.
A tough match against the Three Lions was decided by penalty kicks, with Italy proving victorious. Another master-class performance by Andrea Pirlo lifted the Azzuri over Germany 2-1 in the semifinals, setting up a rematch against the Spanish in the finals.
Spain proved to be too much for a tired Italian squad, and La Roja romped to a 4-0 win. Regardless, Italy can be proud of its exciting run to the finals — not to mention its beautiful fans who were there every step of the way.
