Mike Aviles Deals With Slight Case of Turf Toe, Shouldn't Miss Much TimeBOSTON — Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Aviles were each offered days off on Saturday.

But the breathers were for two different reasons. Since Ellsbury is still easing his body back into major league action, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine gave the outfielder "a planned" respite in the dugout.

Aviles, however, needed the rest after suffering turf toe when he made a slide during Friday night's game. Despite the slight discomfort, Valentine expects a quick recovery for the shortstop.

"Those things can really get worse, so he’s off his feet today for most of the day," Valentine said.

In the meantime, Pedro Ciriaco is starting in Aviles' place.
