In return the Red Sox will receive cash considerations from Chicago, according to the Cubs.
The Red Sox signed the 29-year-old Germano in January after he was released by the Cleveland Indians in August 2011. Germano made one appearance for the Red Sox this season, throwing 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief in the first game of a doubleheader against the New York Yankees on July 7.
Germano had been impressive for Triple-A Pawtucket this season, compiling a 9-4 record and 2.60 ERA in 16 starts. However, with Franklin Morales headed back to the bullpen and the Red Sox rotation seemingly set for now, Germano was expendable.
The Cubs will be Germano's fifth major league organization since he was drafted in the 13th round of the 2000 MLB draft. He's also played for the Padres, Reds and Indians.
