Weber has signed a 14-year offer sheet with the Philadelphia Flyers, according to TSN's Darren Dreger. The offer is reportedly worth "upwards of $100 million."
The Predators now have to decide if they want to shell out the cash to retain Weber. They have seven days to match Philadelphia's huge offer.
If the Predators don't match, however, they'll be rewarded quite handsomely in terms of compensation, which comes in the form of draft picks and is tied to the average per year cap hit of the offer sheet. The Preds would reportedly receive either four first-round picks or two first-round picks, one second-round pick and one third-round pick from the Flyers.
Weber, a three-time All-Star and two-time Norris Trophy finalist, became a restricted free agent after his one-year, $7.5 million deal that was awarded through arbitration expired after the season. The 26-year-old has spent his entire seven-year career with Nashville, but the offer sheet — which could end up being the third largest deal in terms of dollar amount in NHL history — is for a good chunk of change.
Suter, who left Nashville via free agency earlier this offseason, inked a 13-year, $98 million deal with Minnesota. Clearly, the up-in-the-air future of the NHL right now isn't stopping teams from being aggressive.
