The sanctions include a $60 million fine, a four-year postseason ban, the loss of 10 scholarships in 2012 and 20 in 2013-2016, and five years' probation. The school will also be forced to vacate every football victory since 1998 — 112 wins in all.
Penn State took down the statue of late coach Joe Paterno outside of Beaver Stadium on Sunday, but that was a minor occurrence compared with the major NCAA penalties handed down Monday. However, considering the disturbing nature of Sandusky's crime and the subsequent cover-up involving the university's most prominent officials, harsh penalties were probably required. Although the NCAA stopped short of giving the program "the death penalty," the postseason ban and loss of scholarships will make it difficult for new head coach Bill O'Brien to attract recruits to State College.
