Vote: Should the Red Sox Retire Jason Varitek's Jersey?Jason Varitek is one of the most beloved players in the history of the Boston Red Sox. Each time the former team captain stepped into the box or readied himself behind home plate, the Fenway Faithful could rest assured that the team was under solid leadership.

But was Varitek important enough to the franchise for the Sox to consider retiring his No. 33 jersey?

Varitek's career numbers would not validate him as a prime candidate to have his jersey retired, but when you consider his dedication and worth to the franchise, the situation may require further examination.

Varitek spent each of his 15 major league seasons with the Red Sox, helping the team to a pair of World Series and providing stable leadership along the way. While he mustered a career batting average of just .256, it was Varitek's defense and presence behind the plate that Sox fans will remember.

Very few players have had such a lasting impact on the franchise, but is that enough for Varitek to overcome statistical shortcomings and have his jersey retired?
