Yu Yang, one of eight badminton players disqualified from the doubles tournament at the London Olympics, looks to be hanging up the racket.
Chinese badminton officials have not confirmed Yu’s retirement, but a comment on her verified Tencent account — a microblogging service — late Wednesday night appears to say it all.
“This is my last game. Farewell Badminton World Federation. Farewell my dear badminton,” the comment reads, according to The Associated Press.
Yu and teammate Wang Xiaoli comprised one of the four teams that were DQ’d for playing poorly in an effort to gain a more favorable position in the next phase of the event. Two teams from South Korea and one from Indonesia were also part of the mass disqualification.
Yu apologized for her actions on Chinese television Wednesday, but apparently there was no going back to the sport she loves. Making matters even more interesting is that Yu and Wang were world champions and gold medal favorites.
Talk about a rapid fall from grace. Shame on Yu.
