The best goalie’s mask in hockey history may belong to Atte Engren.

The name may not be familiar to most casual hockey fans, but the 2007 seventh-round draft pick by the Nashville Predators is adding a pretty cool mask to his arsenal.

Yahoo’s Puck Daddy blog points out that Engren will wear a mask this season that will serve as an homage to the 1986 movie Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis and Val Kilmer. Engren recently tweeted out some photos of the new mask, which features Maverick’s mug adorned with his trademark Aviator sunglasses.

Unfortunately, as Puck Daddy also points out, Engren may not be wearing the mask in games. The 24-year-old, who will be playing in Finland this season, recently hinted on Twitter that he’ll be using the mask primarily in practice.

Regardless, it’s good to see Engren giving in to his need for speed with one of the best masks we may ever see.

It’s awesome, too, because it allows us to post this video, with photos of the mask below.
