Jeremy Guthrie, who has suddenly revived his career in Kansas City, had a no-hitter going with two outs in the seventh inning when Paul Konerko hit a chopper into the hole at short. Alcides Escobar made a nice backhanded play, but he bounced his throw to first base, allowing Konerko to reach base.
Royals fans held their collective breath as the official scorer determined whether the play should go as an error or the game’s first hit. It didn’t take long for those watching at home to realize the ruling, as the K.C. fans quickly expressed their disapproval with the decision to call the play a hit, thus breaking up Guthrie’s bid.
In the end, it didn’t matter much, as Guthrie would go on to allow two more hits before exiting with two outs in eighth. But had that been the only knock of the game, you can bet Royals fans would have been a bit more disgruntled than they already are on Monday morning.
