A player's grip can make all the difference between a ball or a strike — or a throw going toward second base or backwards into the stands.
The Dodgers' Jerry Hairston gave away both an extra base and a free souvenir against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. After collecting a hit near the left-field line, he moved to throw the ball to second base and nab the runner — but the ball flipped off his fingers and fell behind him into the seats. A lucky fan was there to get it, and the runner advanced to third base.
