Melky Cabrera‘s 50-game suspension is hardly a surprise to BALCO founder Victor Conte.
Cabrera was suspended Wednesday following a positive test for testosterone — something Conte said he heard a rumor about three weeks ago. But while he doesn’t find the news shocking in the least, he does find it hard to comprehend how Cabrera could be dumb enough to get caught.
Conte, who was the president of BALCO and who served time in prison in 2005 after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute steroids and money laundering, tweeted the following after hearing about Cabrera’s suspension.
The T/E test is easy to beat. Only the dumber than dumb get caught RT @leroy1027 What are your thoughts on Melky’s positive drug test?

Yep. I heard the rumor 3 weeks ago RT @sactownsphinest: You called Melky!

Failed an IQ test. Easy to beat test RT @rmaq28: Thoughts? Per @mlb, Melky Cabrera suspended 50 games for testing positive for testosterone.

Conte also told USA Today that “maybe as much as half of baseball” is still using performance-enhancing drugs and circumventing the system. He also said that he’s talked to a lot of top players in Major League Baseball who tell him what they’re doing.
Conte noted that he’s not going to name names, though, which should have those players breathing a sigh of relief. For now.
