Going 4-for-4 on Saturday, Pedro Ciriaco continued his trend of torturing the Yankees.
With the effort, Ciriaco became the first Red Sox player to tally multiple four-hit games against the Yankees since Wade Boggs, who achieved the feat three times during the 1989 season.
How does he explain the success? Well, he can't.
"I enjoy every time I'm in the lineup," Ciriaco told reporters in New York. "Doesn't matter what team. When we play against the Yankees, it's like the finals. We do the best we can.
"I think they gave me good pitches to hit. I tried to do the most, hit the ball to the middle, try to make something happen. I took advantage of that. I don't think it's anything else. Probably a little bit lucky, too."
In seven career games against New York, the utility man is 15-for-29 (.517) with seven RBIs, nine runs and four stolen bases. Keep in mind the 26-year-old went 0-for-4 in the first game of the July 7 doubleheader against the Yankees.
"You think [the Yankees are] going to try to trade for him if he clears waivers?" Red Sox manger Bobby Valentine asked reporters. "He's played well against them. Doesn't surprise me — it amazes me that he is who he is with that kind of talent and hasn't been utilized before."
Only two other hitters — Glenn Hubbard (1988) and Howie Kendrick (2006) — have collected at least 15 hits against the Yankees in their first 30 at-bats.
