You better be prepared to get physical when you're in the paint with Nakia Sanford.

Phoenix mayor Greg Stanton came to that realization the hard way on Monday, suffering a broken nose while practicing with Sanford's WNBA squad, the Phoenix Mercury, according to The Arizona Republic.

Stanton was going through some drills with the team when Sanford caught him with an elbow as the two both went for a loose ball. The contact bloodied Stanton, sending him back to City Hall with a nose that was fractured in two places and with shorts and sneakers that now have slightly more red in them. That, of course, was after a quick pit stop at the hospital.

"My biggest mistake was thinking I could actually get a rebound," Stanton reportedly said. "As I now know, they're tough."

Stanton is taking the incident in stride, though, even tweeting a photo of the damage. And when it comes to Sanford, don't you dare go talking to her about "nosegate," as she was simply doing her job.

Check out a video of the incident below. Then, check out a photo tweeted by Mayor Stanton.
