Red Sox Acquire Reliever Pedro Beato From Mets In Exchange for Catcher Kelly ShoppachThe Red Sox have received their compensation for Kelly Shoppach.

On Thursday, the team announced they had received right-handed pitcher Pedro Beato as the player to be named later from Tuesday's trade with the Mets. The 25-year-old hurler was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Beato started the season in New York on the disabled list with right shoulder stiffness. He appeared in seven games for the Mets this year, allowing five hits and five runs through 4 1/3 innings. He struck out five batters and posted a 10.38 ERA.

In 27 minor league games this season, which include appearances in High-A — a three-game rehab stint — and Triple-A for the Mets organization, Beato racked up a 4-4 record with a 3.73 ERA, 31 strikeouts and 12 walks.

Last season, Beato was a key piece of the Mets' bullpen in his first season in the majors, going 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA in 60 games for the Mets. The Orioles selected the reliever in the first round of the 2006 MLB draft.

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox moved reliever Scott Atchison, who is battling a right forearm strain, to the 60-day disabled list.
