U.S. Men's Soccer Team Takes Page From U.S. Women's Playbook, Winning in Mexico in Dramatic FashionThis soccer thing just might have a chance to catch on in the U.S. after all.

In the wake of the U.S. Women’s team claiming gold in London, the men decided to get in on the fun of winning as well. So they knocked off Mexico 1-0 in Wednesday’s friendly to claim the first victory against El Tri at Azteca.

With the win, the U.S. improves to 1-23-1 all-time south of the border, with that one in the win column looming awfully large.

Tim Howard made a couple spectacular saves, Michael Orozco Fiscal scored off a brilliant back-heel flip from Terrence Boyd and the Americans escaped with a startling win that could be considered the masterpiece of coach Jurgen Klinsmann‘s reign leading the U.S. squad.

Yes, it was a friendly, but it was also an important statement for the Americans to make against Mexico, considering the gold medal El Tri had just won at the Olympics. The U.S. may not have qualified for London, but the big boys on this team showed themselves more than capable of competing on the big stage at Azteca.

The Olympic teams are mostly comprised of players aged 23 and under. The national squads have no such limitations. So while the future may be bright for Mexico, the United States is showing flashes of a shining present.
