Vote: Should the Patriots Sign Plaxico Burress? The Patriots are entertaining a lot of options at wide receiver. Aside from sure-thing picks such as Wes Welker, Deion Branch and Brandon Lloyd, the Pats have also brought in Donte Stallworth and Jabar Gaffney to try out for the team.

So, while it seems that New England already has enough options on the end of Tom Brady passes to put together a unit going into the season, a little healthy competition can't hurt, right?

That's the logic upon learning that the Patriots have invited former jailbird Plaxico Burress to work out with the team and try out for a spot.

In New England, Burress is likely known for two things: His starring role on a New York Giants team that beat the Pats in Super Bowl XLII, and the infamous nightclub incident in which he accidentally shot himself in the leg, then spent about a year and a half in prison.

The Patriots have an extensive history of bringing in talented but troubled players — wide receivers, in particular — that other teams seem to not want to trust. The payoff has been a mixed bag, ranging from the highs of Randy Moss to the lows of Chad Ochocinco.

With that history in mind, should the Pats give Burress a shot?
