BOSTON — With a fielder's choice in the fifth inning, Dustin Pedroia achieved a feat.
Pedroia was out at first, but the run that crossed home plate was Pedroia's 400th career RBI. But he couldn't celebrate the accomplishment — nor did he care to — after Boston lost 7-5 to Toronto.
"I didn't even know that," Pedroia said of the accomplishment. "We're trying to come out and play winning baseball. We haven't played well the last few weeks — basically, the last couple of months. We've got to find a way to put a good game together and come out and build on it."
Pedroia has rebounded after a lackluster first half. Since Aug. 5, he's hit safely in all but two games and has batted 46-for-124 (.371) with 14 doubles, four home runs, 18 RBIs and 23 runs.
Pedroia hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to pull the Red Sox within 5-3, but it wasn't enough to overcome a dominant pitching performance by Blue Jays starter Henderson Alvarez.
"We didn't score early," Pedroia said. "Alvarez has good stuff. He had late sink on his ball. He was good. We couldn't find a way to get any runs early. We scored some runs late, but we've got to do a better job of putting some runs on the board."
Otherwise, milestone accomplishments will have very little meaning.
