Ben Cherington, Red Sox Want Jason Varitek to ‘Get His Feet Wet in Different Areas’ of Front OfficeJason Varitek is coming back to the Red Sox, except this time, the former captain won’t be flashing signals from behind home plate.

He’ll be making decisions from the front office.

It has been speculated that Varitek would be making a return to the team in some role and Ben Cherington officially spoke regarding the matter on Thursday on WEEI.

“There’s no one more respected in our clubhouse, really still, than ‘Tek,” said Cherington “My hope is that he can be a set of eyes and ears for me and we can expose him to a lot of different things, let him see what he enjoys the most, what he doesn’t and we will go from there. We’re going to allow him to kind of get his feet wet in different areas and get to know different areas of the organization and just be someone I can call and bounce some stuff off of.”

Varitek officially retired from baseball last offseason after spending 15 years with the organization. The switch-hitting catcher was named captain in 2005, the club’s first since Jim Rice in 1983.
