Jim Calhoun's retirement will inspire varying reactions, depending on how each fan views the irascible Braintree, Mass., native's tenure as a college basketball coach. Two things that cannot be debated, however, are that Calhoun won a lot and produced quite a few really good players.
Clifford Robinson, the incumbent star-in-waiting when Calhoun arrive at UConn in 1986, was only the tip of the iceberg for the talent Calhoun would help produce during his 26 years in Storrs, Conn. In the decades to come, the Huskies would produce numerous Big East players of the year, all-Americans and NCAA Tournament most outstanding players en route to three national titles. Even before Calhoun took over the Huskies, he had overseen the beginning of Reggie Lewis' development into an NBA All-Star.
